Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern, structured (JSON) successor to legacy text WHOIS. It returns the same registration data — the organization a block is assigned to, contact handles, allocation dates and status — but in a consistent machine-readable format, automatically routed to the correct regional registry via IANA bootstrap.

Which registry answers for a given IP?

One of the five RIRs owns each block: ARIN (North America), RIPE NCC (Europe, Middle East & Central Asia), APNIC (Asia-Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America & Caribbean) or AfriNIC (Africa). The lookup is routed to the right one automatically.

Why does WorldIP.io show more than a raw WHOIS/RDAP query?

RDAP carries only the registry record. WorldIP.io overlays geolocation, ASN, BGP routing and reverse DNS on top of it, so an address becomes a full picture. Open any /ip page for a single address, or a /range page for a whole block.

Does the registry record equal who controls the IP?

It shows the organization an address block is allocated or assigned to — the closest authoritative answer to "who owns this." The network actually announcing it (its BGP origin AS) can differ for leased or sub-allocated space.

Can I look up IPv6 addresses and domains too?

Yes. The tool accepts IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, IPv4 and IPv6 CIDR networks, ASNs, and domain names. IP and ASN queries route to the responsible RIR; domain queries route via the IANA DNS bootstrap to the authoritative registry and return the registrar, status, nameservers and registration/expiry dates. Open the matching /domain page on WorldIP.io to see every IP ever associated with that domain.
